One year after the release of the remarkable "Soma Sema", northerners Stengah now offers an EP, "Downward Mechanic", in the tradition of its predecessor, given that the tracks were written during the same period.
The EP reveals its potential as the songs progress, the opening track 'The Earth Awakes' sounding a little too much like many other progressive tracks. Then, under a heap of intense riffs and percussive drums, the band erects a wall of sound like a slimy web that captures us in its nets. The variations bring a breath of fresh air, allowing us to savor beautiful melodies and emotional moments: an angelic passage ('Sheltered Within') that leads into a dissonant guitar, an aerial interlude on 'Reign Of An Apocryph', a sublime acoustic guitar accompanied by limpid vocals ('Resurface (September's Gone)') or beautiful vocal harmonies.
This fresh record, with its clear production, leaves plenty of space between its riffs. The emotion that inhabits it is revealed as you discover it: the beginning is common, the end very intense. It takes five tracks to digest the Nordic band's progressive music and sharp riffs.
Navigating between gentleness and violence, "Downward Mechanic" requires patience and time to be fully appreciated. Buoyed by excellent technique (the terrific syncopated drums of 'Inner Space' combined with Meshuggah-style riffs) and dressed up in limpid, powerful production, Stengah offers a powerful, modern record. - Official website
