Disorientation is a duo made up of Marie-Claude Fleury (vocals, oboe...) and Daniel Daris (guitar, bass). But don't be fooled by the presence of a female singer: the Canadians have no connection, however remote, with the gothic movement or with doom in the feminine form. Nor does the use of the oboe, rare in metal, indicate any kind of symphonic approach. Unless it's at its most crazy and noisy. In short, Disorientation is closer to Mr Bungle than Therion! If you're a fan of easy listening, don't bother, because your orifices are likely to bleed like crazy.

In truth, the band's name says it all, evoking an experimental music, a deconstruction that has nothing to do with melodies or beauty. "Survival Mode" isn't much fun to unpack, then. You even have to be brave enough to sink into these entrails eaten away by contaminating madness. The fact that the ordeal lasts just over fifteen minutes doesn't make it any less bearable. The duo appear in unison with a frankly chaotic expression, fuelled as much by the hysterical, hair-raising vocals as by the crazy guitars. Even the oboe and English horn played by Marie-Claude do more than contribute to the cacophony.

What kind of music is this, anyway? The band is labelled doom. Indeed, there's a bit of it in the leaden flatness and heavy crevasses. Death metal isn't far off either, with its rusty dissonance. To speak of black metal in its most tortured definition would be no more absurd. In truth, Disorientation resembles nothing, and that's all to the good. Given this apocalyptic description, it would be easy to pillory "Survival Mode".

Yet it's not impossible to detect in this initially uninviting EP, not a form of beauty (let's not exaggerate) but at least a kind of fascinating radiance, a haunting glow that is at times reminiscent of the most hallucinatory King Crimson. An album recommended for those who aren't afraid of the most dissonant (very) extreme metal.

THE INTERSPHERE: Wanderer (2023)
POP - With no real surprises in store, 'Wanderer' remains an excellent introduction to The Intersphere, a talented band who have their place among the most interesting formations in the genre.
ISSA: Lights Of Japan (2023)
A.O.R. - While it's not yet a must-have, 'Lights Of Japan' is clearly Issa's best album, and allows them to finally move up a division.
