Mikael Erlandsson is back with a new album from Autumn's Child, the descendant of the now-retired Last Autum's Dream, as he has been doing every year since 2020. The Swedish multi-instrumentalist and composer with the most recognisable voice has chosen the name of his new album as a tribute to Tellus, the mother goddess of Roman mythology (Gaia to the Greeks). "Tellus Timeline' is the band's fifth release.

More AOR than melodic hard rock, the Scandinavian band has managed to lure in the followers of its august predecessor by playing the mimicry card and offering light compositions with easy melodies rooted in the 80s. Autumn's Child's productions are therefore reserved for listeners who are not afraid of the soothing musical ambience or the sometimes slightly outdated aspects of the melodies on offer. However, the band sometimes grow metal wings and stray a little off the beaten track. Their AOR then veers into more dynamic melodic hard rock. As with their previous work, it's the first three tracks that bear witness to this welcome drift. There are hints of Ten in 'Gates Of Paradise' and 80s Abba on caffeine in 'Here Comes the Night'.

As for the rest, even if there are a few suitably shapely hard melodic tracks here and there (the very tasty 'Never Surrender', despite its old-fashioned keyboards), we're still heading for serene rock territory. 'Around The World In A Day' evokes the Beatles and the Electric Light Orchestra, 'Come Get It' reminds the famous 'Love Is All' (Roger Glover/Butterfly Ball), 'Juliet' will thrill 80s AOR fans and 'I Belong To You' sounds like something off an album by the Liverpool Four.

It's a safe bet that, apart from band's fans, hard rockers will turn their backs on 'Tellus Timeline'. As for rockers who loved the 70s, many of whom are probably unaware of the existence of this confidential band, they can give it a try. Maybe one day, Autumn's Child will insist more on his heavy side, to bring us a real album of melodic hard rock.

PROGRESSIVE METAL - "... And Everything In Between" by Unprocessed is a musical adventure in which you never really know what to expect, exploring all sorts of directions without worrying about genre labels.
RICK SPRINGFIELD: Automatic (2023)
POP - Rick Springfield has betrayed both his fans and himself with this easily digestible pop 'Automatic', which has no depth or catchiness.
