Five years after "From Worry To Shame", American progressive rock band Head With Wings return with their second album, "Without Interventions". Whereas the band had collaborated with Frank Sacramone and Jamie Van Dyck (Earthside) on the previous opus, this new record, recorded in a four-piece format, was made without outside interventions.

"Without Interventions" follows in the footsteps of "From Worry To Shame", offering us agitated progressive rock, marked by luminous sequences that follow on from one another in a pleasant sequence. The guitar still plays a central role, with guitar duo Brandon Cousino and Joshua Corum, who is also the vocalist.

The arpeggios unfold with grace and gentleness, sometimes acoustic as on 'Absolute Zero', although the elements can sometimes be unleashed as on the tempestuous opener 'The Dream Broker'. The keyboard provides a hushed counterpoint to the guitar madness, particularly on 'Galaxy', 'Comfort Of Illusion' and 'Absolute Zero'. Joshua Corum's deep vocals, sometimes soothing, sometimes raging, recall the voice of Billy Corgan, the eternal teenager of the Smashing Pumpkins. It's a pity that the two short interludes '26 Bell Chimes' and 'Remnant' don't get a longer treatment.

While the compositions on "Without Intervention" are very accessible and perfectly executed, progressive rock fans looking for slightly more convoluted structures or more atmospheric moments may find it a little frustrating to listen to. In spite of this, we have here a very good album which should appeal to a fairly wide audience and enable them to discover Head With Wings.
