Get your perfecto out of the cupboard and get ready to shake! In this stormy autumn, Finland's Temple Balls are releasing their fourth mischief, 'Avalanche', on a cover tinted with icy blues. It's a striking contrast when you consider the state of mind of these boys, who are perfectly capable of setting an audience alight with their compositions packed with energy.
Once again, Temple Balls offers us a highly invigorating opus, with a production made of reinforced concrete. Thanks to Jona Lee, their Scandinavian compatriot from H.E.A.T., who knows exactly what he's doing. Indeed, the Swedish band are not the last to come to mind when listening to the eleven tracks of this particularly festive work. The work, which is all about stadium Rock, is driven by Arde Teronen in top shape. With a voice that remains powerful even in high-pitched mode, he energises the scores by adding an extra grip while the twin guitars finish the job with frenzied solos.
Temple Balls' melodic hard rock contains many influences, and therefore difficult to categorize. However, fans of Crazy Lixx, Crashdiet, Kissin' Dynamite and Reckless Love should have no trouble finding their way around. The opening track ('All Night Long') evokes a completely different musical genre and surprises with a few riffs worthy of Black Star Riders. The impression is fleeting, however, and you soon recognise the Finnish band's playful power in its continuity. 'Lonely Stranger' pulls the same trick again, with its six-string intro akin to Seventh Crystal's 'Say What You Need To Say'. Things then return to normal, and the track transports us into an atmosphere that might suit the soundtrack of a moovie slasher. Finally, the melodies of 'Prisoner In Time' are reminiscent of Europe, and 'Stone Cold Bones' takes the modern A.O.R. approach, calming things down a little.
With 'Avalanche', Temple Balls has certainly released his most enjoyable opus since his debut. Dynamic and unifying, it should trigger compulsive fist pumping and irrepressible swaying among metalheads who appreciate bouncy, muscular compositions. - Official website
