"With 'Innervoid', Eldritch offer a pleasant progressive metal album that unfortunately lacks a great deal of originality."

When you listen to Eldritch, reminiscences of Symphony X are never far away. You can be annoyed or pleased (after all, they haven't released anything for nearly 10 years), but to say that the Italians are copying the Americans is a little too hasty, as the Tuscans still have their own very distinctive style, influenced by other bands such as Fates Warning and Queensrÿche.
While it's not very flattering to start a review of their work by comparing them to other artists, it has to be said that, despite their well-crafted compositions, catchy choruses and top-notch technique, Eldritch never really manages to be totally convincing. Yet "Innervoid" isn't a bad album, far from it, with a number of interesting tracks including 'Handful of Sand', a catchy tune even if it doesn't offer anything very new in terms of what progressive metal already has to offer, or 'Born on a Cold Ash', probably the track with the most impact, thanks to its magnificent sweeping phrasing that gives way to a very well-crafted riff worthy of Fear Factory. Starting an album off so strongly presaged a promising follow-up, but alas, the pace runs out of steam as the album progresses, leaving the listener wanting more, until penultimate track 'Black Bedlam', a subtle and moving invitation to prepare to close the album. The tones and harmonies chosen on this track are indeed quite original and stand out from the crowd.
"Innervoid' is clearly not a memorable album. Eldritch inevitably suffers from comparison at a time when musical production is in full swing. And in this context, the listener might have hoped for a little more risk-taking. Nonetheless, we must salute the longevity of this band and recognise that it is increasingly difficult to stand out in a genre where the codes are now perfectly assimilated. - Official website
