Few artists can claim to have been playing their instrument for over 60 years and still have enough inspiration to continue releasing new albums after twenty solo albums, a dozen live albums and 8 others with Procol Harum. Just a few weeks away from blowing out his 79 candles, blues legend Robin Trower may have rheumatism but his guitar dexterity has stood the test of time remarkably well.

For an artist like Stevie Ray Vaughan to say that your playing inspired his is awe-inspiring, but it's his longevity that's most impressive. In 2022, Robin Trower released an album entitled 'No More World to Conquer', which was not entirely meaningless given the bluesman's experience. It smacked vaguely of the end of a career, but that was to misunderstand the artist and his insatiable love of music and the blues in particular.

So Robin Trower is back in 2023 with a new album, entitled 'Joyful Sky', which can chill the blood of the most paranoid, likening it to the 'life' space from which there is little chance of returning. Welcome to the world of the blues, where optimism is not the watchword. It's not for nothing that the term is associated with that more or less familiar gloomy feeling. But there's a nice oxymoron to be found in using the term 'Joyful' in music that expresses its opposite. To help put his ideas into practice, Robin Trower called on the talents of blues-rock singer Sari Schorr, who, according to the guitarist, was the ideal person to put his music into words. The partnership undeniably works, giving the impression that the band has been around forever.

Now, is it a feat to make a blues recipe work? Purists and Trower fans will say yes, only the risk-taking is minimal, so the chances of slipping are limited. The blues, by virtue of its idiosyncratic structure, is repetitive. Is that a bad thing? No, but the likelihood of being surprised by the genre is low. Robin Trower has nothing to do with it, blues is predictable.

If you get into the album from the first few notes, then the 10 tracks will go down like a charm. But if Sari's voice bothers you, then you'll have to pass, because despite the beauty her generous range, her verses and choruses are unfortunately rather monotonous throughout the album. Not knowing whether Robin Trower will be around for many years to come, 'Joyful Sky' is still an album worth discovering, but it's not essential.

POP - With no real surprises in store, 'Wanderer' remains an excellent introduction to The Intersphere, a talented band who have their place among the most interesting formations in the genre.
