"Darken's "Welcome To The Light" is a fine album of technical, powerful and catchy progressive metal."

Darken made a name for themselves in the late 1980s with their progressive-tinged melodic heavy metal. Two demos were released before the band split up. Re-formed in 2021, they are back at last with an album on which three original members are still present.
"Welcome To The Light" sees the band moving towards progressive metal horizons with an interesting variation in tone. When Darken play it tough, they do so with energy, approaching thrash on the riffs in 'Don't Blame' and 'The Cloud In My Sky'. Coupled with Stéphane's powerful vocals, this evokes the strength of Nevermore.
The band also emphasizes its technical side. 'Mission Accomplished', 'Ground Zero' and 'Rising To Valhalla' are close to a modern, hard-hitting progressive metal. The musicians display a virtuosity and striking power worthy of Periphery or Meshuggah. In a dark, melodic genre, 'The Northern Lights' and 'Leave To Live Your Dreams' display a certain sensitivity in the footsteps of Evegrey.
This melodic bent asserts itself on several tracks. Without forsaking technique, melodies take center stage on the riffs and choruses. Stéphane becomes more catchy while retaining an impressive power. The result is a balance close to that of Pagan's Mind or DGM.
Darken's comeback with "Welcome To The Light" is a great success, with an album carved out of high-flying progressive metal that's just as effective at making you dizzy as it is at seducing you. - Official website
