Canadians Kataklysm have been with us for thirty years. It's been a rich adventure, with highs - notably a devastating death grind debut followed by a good classic death period - and lows, as the band has fallen asleep in recent years, releasing many average albums, but never shameful ones.
The fifteenth album from Maurizio Iacono and his bandmates, "Goliath" maintains the direction taken by the band in recent years. It offers a skilful blend of snarling death with accessible modern death. From the outset, the highly saturated production is brutal but once you're past 'Dark Wings Of Deception', the flaw fades.
The pace over much of the album is intense, with Maurizio's wild, grind-like growl working wonders. 'Die As A King' and 'The Redeemer' show a modern groovy side that marries well with the snarling death side, not far removed from Devildriver. 'Gravestones & Coffins' and 'The Sacrifice For Truth' put the death metal into the background, giving way to a melodic, melancholy atmosphere amidst laid-back, catchy passages.
"Goliath" is a solid record that will not be forgotten as quickly as its predecessors. Kataklysm shows a pretty double face between unstoppable brute force and a more melodic, modern side. - Official website
