Mea culpa! Indeed, when we finished our review of the "Wireless" EP a few months ago, we regretted that the format was too compact for such a great band. As if to prove us wrong, Within Temptation are releasing "Bleed Out" this autumn, barely four months after the controversy. The album takes all the tracks from the previous EP, including 'Entertain You' already released worldwide on video over three years ago, and simply adds six new tracks.

While the catchy melodies that have made them such a success over the past fifteen years are still there, Within Temptation continue the metal turn they've been taking for several years, with a heavier sound ('Cyanide Love') and jerky riffs ('We Go to War') that are very much in vogue in modern metal. The guitars are tuned very low ('Bleed Out'), reinforcing the impression of darkness. Sharon den Adel's ever-expressive voice remains piercing, even if the weight of years clearly prohibits the higher notes she used to produce, but her vocal technique remains impeccable and her timbre stunning.

The rawer, more in-your-face sound fits in perfectly with the heavier subjects the combo tackles, such as the worrying state of our planet or harassment of women, the latter embodied by 'Ritual', a catchy composition whose video clip, directed by artist RART, relies on morphing and AI. Violent and bloody to a fault, the track is a pure visual delight and a joy to behold in the punishment of bullies who think they can do anything. For the rest, the recipe of a "classic" Within Temptation works, without too many surprises. Aside from the excellent tracks already described on the "Wireless" EP, fans of the band will appreciate the catchy, effective melodies carried by an ever-bewitching Sharon des Adel.

Although there are only six new tracks to listen to, Within Temptation can be credited with caring about its audience and trying to be present on a regular basis, in the way of younger bands fond of shorter releases without long periods of silence, a token of adaptation to modern music consumption. The note takes no account of this amalgam and considers the album as a coherent and original whole.
