Eight years separate each of Vivien Lalu's first three albums, but less than two years were needed for the release of "The Fish Who Wanted To Be King". The line-up is less glamorous than on the esteemed "Paint The Sky", but the active Damian Wilson is still at the microphone.
Far from the metal inclinations that dotted his first albums, "The Fish..." remains progressive, but in a less "classic" way than its predecessor: Lalu applies himself to breaking up melodic lines like the Flower Kings, or rhythmic lines like the Germans of Seven Steps to The Green Door, which helps to break the monotony on the long tracks. On the other hand, the tracks lose continuity. From fast-paced (the opening of the title track) to aerial (the Floydian guitars of 'Amnesia' or the Camelian of 'The Fish...'), with effective choral choruses ('Forever Digital'), or verging on jazzy jam (the instrumental 'A Reversal of Fortune', no mean feat), the tracks never lapse into the conventional.
This eclecticism comes at a price: this "deconstructed" approach makes it difficult to hold the listener's attention, making it harder to immerse oneself and get on board - although progressive fans will have no trouble doing so! Benefiting from an extremely clear and deep production, the record is served by impeccable musicians, with a dynamic and efficient rhythm section at the forefront: the bass slams and grooves, and the drummer is swift, fast and imaginative - perhaps a little too intrusive at times...
Aside from the difficult 'Reversal of Fortune', two tracks in the midst of a solid whole fall a little short: the more pop-oriented 'Desoxyribonucleic Acid' and the repetitive 'Is That a London Number?
Less homogeneous than the previous opus, "The Fish..." confirms the talent of Vivien Lalu, who shows here an eclecticism that refuses to get bogged down in convention, which is, after all, the very essence of progressive music. - Official website
