Any Given Sin is a Maryland-based quartet with a long history of online exposure, but "War Within" is their first release.

This debut album offers a collection of eleven effective tracks, all of short duration (around 3'30), in which the band is not stingy with electro effects ('Still Sinking') that perfectly complement a dynamic hard rock that frequently flirts with AOR, built mostly on a classic verse/chorus basis ('Calm Before the Storm'), which doesn't prevent the presence of numerous breaks ('War Within', 'Insidious').

Behind the microphone, Vic Ritchie uses his high-pitched voice in a variety of intonations while seeing his voice frequently doubled in the choruses. Unfortunately, this leads to a form of systematic repetition that ends up tiring, and which the few guitar solos do little to embellish. Distilling a great deal of energy, Any Given Sin also features a few calmer parts, providing welcome breaths of fresh air and a little variety to the whole, with a fine muscular ballad ('Cold Bones') and 'The Way I Say Goodbye', where progressive fans will find a hint of Sylvan.

Well produced and far from uninteresting, "War Within" nevertheless lacks variety in a style that's been tried and tested over and over again. However, Any Given Sin remains a band worth discovering and following, provided they step out of their comfort zone in the future.
