"Even if it doesn't revolutionise the genre, 'Ronwe' is a pleasant album whose simplicity is its strength."

Ronwe is a duo from Phoenix, Arizona, who play a mix of death, thrash and black music. Comprising Ryan Michalski (guitar, bass, drums and keyboards) and Clint Listing on vocals, the duo are also members of an avant-garde doom/death project. Perhaps this explains the album's dark, desperate feel.
"Ronwe" is a hard-hitting record with symphonic orchestrations that are sometimes unexpected ('Through this Door'), but which unfortunately suffers from occasional wavering vocals... Spiced up with robotic keyboards, Ronwe's music is straightforward and uncompromising, with an angst-ridden, sweaty atmosphere, just like the gloomy cover, typical of a death metal that Vader wouldn't have disowned. There are no frills on this record: the riffs are square and sharp, the rhythms precise and impeccable, and the harmonies dark. Unfortunately, the harmonies seem to have been heard hundreds of times.
Full of quality and offering an energetic cocktail, the album works rather well with its well-structured songs. There are a few black passages from Immortals ('Black temple'). Finally, melody is the foundation of the record, the bedrock of the songs ('Time') as it is in power metal ('Go to War') or as it is in In Flames. Some will regret the lack of personality, but the music is sympathetic and brutal as it should be.
"Ronwe" is an album worth discovering, even if it doesn't revolutionise the genre. The Americans make good music that will need to be refined over time and infused with a touch of madness. - Official website
