On the strength of a debut album that won critical acclaim for its credible blend of metal and thrash with elements of Mongolian folklore ("The Gered"), The Hu are back with a vengeance with "Rumble Of Thunder". The band spent 3 years working on this album, taking the time to accentuate the singularity of their music, backed by the experience gained from extensive touring.
While "The Gered" laid the groundwork for this meeting of East and West, it was still far too hung up on The Hu's multiple influences such as Metallica, System Of A Down and Rammstein. "Rumble Of Thunder" brings things back into balance, with the Mongolian instruments playing a much more prominent role, adding an exotic color that highlights the band's signature style. Like Myrath, The Hu pushes the cursor further in this out-of-the-ordinary sound research, asserting their pride in their origins ("This Is Mongol"). In fact, their country is very grateful to them, having created a currency in their effigy just for the band.
The Morin Khuur, Khöömii, Tumur Khuur and Tsuur, traditional Mongolian instruments, undeniably bring a breath of fresh air to the metal style ("YUT Hövende"). While accentuating these singular aspects, The Hu have not lost their sense of melody, which is one of the obvious hallmarks of their compositions. All are endearingly effective, and you're drawn in, almost forgetting the folk aspect of the music. 'Teach Me' is irresistible in this sense, almost a drinking song with a Celtic twist that blends seamlessly with The Hu's personality. The production, moreover, is excellent, allowing you to revel in every instrument, furthering your immersion in this musical journey. 'TATAR Warrior' accentuates the warlike, cinematic feel with its use of horse samples.
By further asserting its distinctive character, The Hu confirms all the good things we thought of "The Gered". A deluxe edition also features densely layered acoustic versions featuring traditional instruments even more prominently. By accentuating the link between Western metal and Mongolian folk music, The Hu has everything it takes to conquer the musical world more peacefully than Genghis Khan in his day. - Official website
