"Romero shifted his focus from covers to original compositions for his solo career. Unfortunately, the all-too classic "Too Many Lies, Too Many Masters" doesn't leave a lasting impression."

Ronnie Romero's third solo album, "Too Many Lies, Too Many Masters", could be considered his first true solo release. The time has come for the fashionable frontman to come up with his own material. Co-composer and co-producer, the Chilean finally spreads his wings. Will he manage not to burn them like Jorn, who was also a figurehead in this field not so long ago?

Like the Norwegian, Ronnie appreciates Ronnie. And Dio is at his best on this opus of old-school heavy rock, particularly on the dark 'Mountain Of Light' and the eponymous track. Our star of the day is so devoted to the late great that he even wanted the cover of his new album to feature one of his idol's songs, in this case "Last In Line". But Dio is not the only one at whose feet Ronnie Romero bows down. Among his influences is David Coverdale. Listening to the bluesy 'Crossroad', the White Snake's rings encircle our offered throats and we feel like we're there. Ronnie is also a fan of the 80's and its melodic hard rock, and he pays tribute to them with 'I've Been Losing You', which brings out the synths of yesteryear. Finally, there's Deep Purple, whose break on 'Chased By Shadows' is reminiscent of that on 'Perfect Stranger'.

This mention of a glorious past may be nice, but the album is boring. Despite a few interesting rhythmic changes, two tracks rescued from the waters ('A Distand Shore' and 'I've Been Losin You'), a promising intro ('Castaway On The Moon') and the aforementioned break, there's not much to save. "Too Many Lies, Too Many Masters" is therefore a disappointment. After two opuses of covers that didn't really stand out, Ronnie Romero doesn't manage to convince with these compositions of his own. Let's hope that he still has enough talent, tenacity and inspiration under his feet to make the next attempt the right one.
