It's already been four years since the Brazilians of Angra presented us with their eclectic "ØMNI". Here comes now the band's tenth album, "Cycles Of Pain", with its exotic religious cover. The dozen tracks of this new work narrate the torments of human pain through its cycles. The team from the previous album is back, with Dennis Ward still at the helm.
"Cycles Of Pain" is Heavy, progressive, diversified, even convoluted, what brings it very close to its elder brother. Chorus galore, rich orchestrations, a diversity of rhythms, progressive sophistication, Angra is where you'd expect it to be. If the adhesion isn't always immediate, most of the tracks will immediately win over fans of addictive melodies even if the complexity of the constructions can sometimes lose a listener attracted by a more easy-listening approach.
The influences that can be spotted here are diverse, but each time the Angra seal is affixed and makes the conception original, the trademark remaining perfectly recognizable. This is one of the greatest successes of this opus. Examples of musical similarities include Helloween and Rhapsody Of Fire on a complex, epic 'Ride Into The Storm', and Dream Theater on 'Vida Seca'. The exotic Brazilian sweetness of its introduction drifts, with confounding ease, into electric and progressive ambiences, making this track, with its soothing and magnificent finale, a must-have on the album. From one track to the next, we move from the radio-friendly modern metal of 'Here In The Now', with its beautiful female vocals and characterful rhythm, to the power metal of 'Generation Warriors', via the power ballad 'Tears Of Blood', where Amanda Sommerville pays us a visit.
As rich as its predecessor, this new Angra production will delight the fans of Angra and progressive metal in general. The exotic fragrances of the Brazilians' scores set them apart from the genre's usual productions, making this "Cycle Of Pain" both special and reassuring. - Official website
