Every new Cannibal Corpse album is an event, despite the thirty-five years the Tampa-based band proudly boasts on the odometer. For all that, the Americans don't scare anyone that much anymore, and the days when their covers and certain lyrics were censored are long gone. They don't surprise us anymore, despite a more aggressive "Red Before Black" (2017). The recruitment of ex-Morbid Angel Eric Rutan since "Violence Unimagined" (2021) hasn't changed things.

"Chaos Horrific", its successor, certainly confirms that Cannibal Corpse is still as punchy as ever, but also - and unfortunately - that it is struggling to renew itself. Technically, of course, it's unstoppable, given the level of the musicians involved. They have the confidence of old hands who don't need to take lessons from anyone. Combined with meticulous execution, this experience dictates an album of impeccable form. And yet, we retain little or nothing from it.

'Blood Blind', heavy and lacerated with oppressive riffs, and 'Pestilential Rictus', at once old-school in its feel and also compressed by a vitiated ambience, hold our attention, to which we can add 'Overlords Of Violence', which, by way of an opener, hooks us like a butcher with his fangs. Unfortunately, the rest passes very quickly without leaving any lasting scars in the flesh, with the exception of 'Frenzied Feeding', which also has the good taste to sink into still-smoldering viscera. It's when Alex Webster's band apply the handbrake that they generate enthusiasm, which they don't do often enough. Add to this a cruel lack of originality, from the cover to the song titles, and the result can only be a definite disappointment.

"Chaos Horrific" is just another album for Cannibal Corpse, who perform without ever forcing their talent. Cannibal Corpse's fans will no doubt consider this review unfair, and they'll certainly be right. However, the fact remains that we expect better - and more - from this dinosaur of death metal than this piece of meat, which won't leave any great memories in the mouth.

JASON BIELER: Postcards From The Asylum (2023)
HARD ROCK - By trying too hard to surprise the listener, Jason Bieler once again misses the point with "Postcards From The Asylum".
LINKIN PARK: Meteora (2004)
NEO/NU METAL - A logical follow-up to "Hybrid Theory", "Meteora" is an album that will satisfy Linkin Park fans, but suffers from a certain lack of renewal.
