"Alice Cooper continues to deliver energy, humanity and humor on "Road", a concept album about the life of a band on the road."

After the moving "Detroit Stories" of 2021, Vincent Furnier has decided to change course. Eternal accomplice Bob Ezrin is still at the helm but the line-up has changed (apart from the faithful Tommy Henriksen). With a cover that evokes wide-open spaces and night terrors, this concept album about the life of musicians on the road delivers a portrait not devoid of humor ('Rules Of The Road', hilarious) and drawn in good humor. Alice Cooper had in mind the idea of killing two birds with one stone: offering playing time to his companions in the studio, but above all showing everyone how powerful this band's sound is on album (and therefore live) without the artifice of overdubs.

And indeed, from the start, the fifth gear is set in motion: supercharged drums ('Welcome To The Show'), guitars that are not stingy with decibel discharges ('All Over The World', 'Roads Rate Forever'), moving towards the heavier in 'The Big Goodbye' or 'Dead Don't Dance', or the more massive - 'White Line Frankenstein', a track that will please metal fans, with Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) for an explosive result. Brass is never far away ('All Over The World'). The album closes with an unbridled cover of The Who's 'Magic Bus', for a mixed results and a somewhat heavy drum solo.

Alice Cooper's voice doesn't suffer at all from the passage of years; in fact, it improves. As acidic, sarcastic, appealing and horrifying as ever, it can also be touching, as on the album's most moving moment, the ballad 'Baby Please Don't Go' (with the returning Roger Glover on bass). '100 More Miles' recaptures some of the symphonic thrill of "Welcome To My Nightmare", with the songwriter performing a real exercise in vocal balance and his tired patriarch voice inviting us to follow him in his end-of-concert ramblings.

At 75, Alice Cooper continues to enchant us with a new opus that pays tribute to his discography while injecting it with fresh blood and avoiding the pitfall of nostalgia. Rock'n'roll is still very much alive, thank you Mr. Furnier!

OTHER REVIEWS
DEGREED: Public Address (2023)
MELODIC HARD ROCK - Less perfect than its predecessor, "Public Address" nevertheless contains enough melodious energy to satisfy fans of modern melodic hard rock.
GRIP: Solstici (2023)
DOOM - Grip's "Solstici" is Doom as we like it: feminine and melancholy, granitic and dark.
