"Once again, England's Vega hit the mark with "Battlelines", an energetic album of melodic hard rock."

As autumn approaches, Vega brings us their eighth album, fourteen years after their debut. This conceptual velocity, coupled with consistent product quality, has enabled the Britons to establish themselves in the battle of Scandinavian melodic hard rock bands over the years. Will "Battlelines" succeed in driving even deeper the nail in the coffin of its predecessor, "Anarchy And Unity"?

Once again, the team is in a state of flux. Gone are the Martin twins on bass and keyboards, and welcome to the illustrious unknown Mart Trail on four-string. As for the synths, no one seems to have been invited to replace the departed. It has to be said that Vega doesn't use them as much as he used to in his last compositions. On "Battlelines", they're absent altogether, which goes hand in hand with the English band's recent hardening of tone.

Nick Workman's vocals, electrified by enthusiastic backing vocals, are as flawless as ever, and the rhythmic base solidly supports the edifice, which is nonetheless shaken by incisive guitars. As for the quintet's melodic savoir-faire, another fundamental of Vega's music, it suffers no let-up. Fans can rest assured that this new album is right in line with the previous productions.

It grooves, it ruffles, and it even pulses on the three mid-tempi tracks, which barely curb the energy developed over the whole work. The quality of the whole is so linear that it's hard to single out any one track. Let's just mention 'Love To Hate You' to highlight the frontman's uncommon aggression, 'Gotta Be You' for its nod to Def Leppard, and the downright pop 'God Save The King'.

Vega perseveringly continues on its merry way. Let's congratulate these Englishmen for daring to hold their own against the cold-blooded peoples who are now dominating the melodic hard rock scene. They didn't shoot first, but despite that they've once again hit the mark.
