Silent Skies is a project put together by two musicians, Tom Englund of Evergrey and Redemption on vocals and Vikram Shankar of Lux Terminus and Redemption on keyboards.
"Dormant" is the duo's third album, a little different from their previous two. These songs could accompany a film or series, and inevitably conjure up images and moods. All the tracks are in a melancholy vein and set to a slow tempo. This gives the ambiences time to settle in, and listening through headphones reinforces the "3D" depth of the songs (some would say atmospheric).
There are several distinct moments in the album. The first five songs contain the most immediate tracks, instantly showcasing Tom Englund's voice (notably the striking 'Construct' which opens the LP, and 'Churches'). The next five tracks introduce new instruments, including drums and cello. Particularly noteworthy is 'The Real Me', with its melody and vocal hooks that stay with you for a long time. This track is the prelude to a trio of songs that bring the "original" part of the album to a fitting close. Finally, the album closes with a number of surprising covers (Iron Maiden's 'Trooper' is hard to recognize, Linkin Park's 'Numb' barely easier).
With its special, captivating atmospheres, "Dormant" is a real success. The duo that forms Silent Skies works very well, and the economy of means and effects employed give breath and real depth to this musical edifice, which should arouse the curiosity of many a music lover. - Official website
