It's been over five years since the Dutch band Within Temptation last graced us with a release, since the excellent "Resist". Very active for their fans during COVID, with intimate acoustic videos, Sharon Den Adel's band didn't take the opportunity to write during this period, unlike many other artists.
They return this summer with a five-track EP to keep us waiting for a hypothetical future album. We're delighted to find the quintet's melodic metal, the incredible voice of the beautiful Sharon and the huge sound of one of the pillars of the genre.
On the menu, four tracks made from the same blend of melodic and accessible metal. Within Temptation is the best the genre has seen in years. The straightforward, well-produced tracks take turns naturally with a beautiful homogeneity without becoming redundant. 'Wireless' and 'The Purge' feature heady, jerky riffs and effective melodies, superbly delivered by Sharon Den Adel's stunning vocals. On 'Shed My Skin', the band feat. with Germany's Annisokay (melodic post-hardcore), in a seductive marriage with Christoph Wieczorek and Rudi Schwarzer impeccably accompanying Sharon throughout.
The fifth track is no stranger, as it's 'Entertain You', a single that the band unveiled 3 years ago in a muscular video that has been making the rounds on the playlists of every fan of the Dutch combo. The second half of the album is made up of the same five tracks in their instrumental version, an exercise which, if it loses the quintessence of Within Temptation without Den Adel's vocals, has the merit of focusing us on Ruud Jolie's own compositions and excellent arrangements.
If EPs are fashionable and everyone is releasing them, it's still disappointing to have to make do with so little, coming from one of melodic metal's flagship bands who, what's more, hasn't produced anything since 2018. Fortunately, the few tracks on offer are well-written and effective, otherwise the sanction would have been heavy when it came time to grade the album. We expected so much more... - Official website

Les groupes vivent du live (un peu les tournées, beaucoup les festivals). Le EP n'est peut-être pas une mode, mais une adaptation à l'époque.
Mieux vaut sortir 4 ou 5 titres tous les 18 mois pour amener de la nouveauté dans les set lists qu'un album tous les trois ans. Dans tous les cas, ils ne vendront quasiment rien (ou du moins, carrément pas assez pour en vivre)
On verra quand arrivera la prochaine livraison de WT.
Musicalement, celui-ci ne révolutionne pas le groupe, mais comme je n'en avais pas écouté depuis très longtemps, je me suis dis "tien, tu devrais t'y remettre". C'est déjà pas mal...

Totalement en accord avec cette chronique. Within Temptation, qui voit depuis ces dernières années se bousculer au portillon de plus en plus de concurrents (Delain, Beyond The Black, The Dark Element, Ad Infinitum, The Dark Side Of The Moon, voire Amaranthe...) nous la joue malgré cela économe sur ce coup-là. Franchement attendre cinq ans pour se mettre ce mini-effort sous le casque est carrément abuser. Voilà une bien étrange idée que de penser pouvoir lutter contre la concurrence en optant pour la radinerie conceptuelle. Je rage ! Secouez-vous Messieurs-dames !
