For over a dozen years, Grand Design has been releasing albums that have been both appreciated and criticized. This is due to a strong tendency to sound like Def Leppard before "Hysteria". Homage or cloning, the debate rages on. "Rawk", the Swedes' sixth opus, hits stores today, and it's reasonable to assume that these youngest warriors have decided to ignore the reproaches that will inevitably, once again, evoke this mimicry.
Nevertheless, even if NWOBHM is present on every track, on this eleven-track album we come across other influences from that bygone era. Mötley Crüe features on 'Tuff It Out', as does Gary Moore ("After The War" era) on 'Carry On My Mind' and Accept on the verses of 'In The H.E.A.T. Of The Nite'. For the rest, Heavy Pettin' comes to mind, with its enthusiastic, carefree and festive hard rock, while noting certain influences from glam metal. The Poodles are also not far away on 'Love Or A Fantaisy', but also 220 Volt in some of the riffs and melodies. In a dynamic, upbeat atmosphere that inevitably leads to toe-tapping, the Swedes make it clear that real life is all about fun, girls and rock'n'roll!
After reading these references, most of whom are in their forties, it's clear that Grand Design will appeal mainly to 80s fans. Those for whom this revival is not their cup of tea may well find "Rawk" somewhat outdated. Nevertheless, it would be a pity not to take advantage, in these somewhat complicated times, of the positive energy and good humor poured out here. - Official website
