"Resting on a melancholy subtly distilled behind good moments of violence, Lodz comes back stronger with "Moons And Hideaways" both melodic and brutal."

After two albums and an EP, Lodz has been questioning itself. In order to find answers, the band started a kind of musical psychotherapy during 2019 by going on retreat. For weeks, the members of the french combo isolated themselves to think about what their next step would be. In the meantime, two new members (Eric on drums and Julien on bass) joined Eric (vocals) and Olivier (guitar) to bring a fresh perspective.
What the band didn't know at the time was that the pandemic was going to lock them up even more in an isolation, this time forced and coerced. However, Lodz had already advanced their new compositions to give birth to a new album, "Moons and Hideaways", almost three years after their desired retirement. All this work of introspection carried out shows on the cover. Influenced by Cult Of Luna and Katatonia, by a kind of ambivalence between moments of violence counterbalanced by more atmospheric parts, Lodz tries to emancipate itself from them.
The general atmosphere thus leans towards a kind of melancholy without being leaden. It appears rather subtle from the opening instrumental track ('Pyramids') and will thus serve as a guide to the listener throughout the eight following tracks. The fans of the first hour will not be totally destabilized by finding this art to mix brutal moments and melodic and soaring passages ('You'll Become a Memory') where in unison, music and vocal lines transpose pure emotions. Behind this architecture, there is a little doom or even post-rock side in this search for catharsis.
By changing his approach to writing, Lodz gains in coherence what he may lose in spontaneity. The compositions seem to be better thought out, more accomplished, which makes it possible to find a rather beautiful balance between lyrics and instrumental passages which never fall into excess. Add to that the use of samples that accentuate the concept of introspection ('Chimeras'), and you get a solid record that will please most people. Those who are reluctant to growl can be reassured, they are there to accentuate the contrasts and to favour the expression of a rage that has been held back for too long ('Sorry For September') and are not invasive.
Lodz has finally found its sound signature while keeping its base on two hemispheres: violence and melody. "Moons And Hideaways" opens a new chapter or departure for the band that cultivates its melancholy without falling into spleen and depression, with a robust metal sometimes dipping towards post rock. This is their best album to date. - Official website
