Probably out of his depth, Joey De Maio ended up taking Manowar to uninteresting territory. It's been over twenty years since the Kings of Metal offered anything of interest, leaving all the warriors who formed their army orphaned. Since then, a number of bands have tried to pick up the two-handed sword and the warhammer, but whether it's Hammerfall, Brothers Of Metal or others, none of them have managed to get the metal crowds on their feet the way the American quartet did. Formed in 2022 by vocalists Tim 'Tetzel' Schmidt (Asenblut) and Antonio Calanna (ex DeVicious), German-Italian outfit All For Metal set out to conquer the vacant throne, and “Legends” is their first recording.

Taking up all the clichés of the genre, the sextet - to whom we must add two female dancers who join the band on stage - nevertheless seem to have found the right formula to succeed. Indeed, ten unstoppable bombs punctuate this opus, combining power and melody and leaving their mark on the listener with choruses of limitless effectiveness. One listen is enough to scream the eponymous anthem and sing it for hours. The energy is monumental, and is reflected throughout the tracks, which vary in tempo: 'Goddess Of War', the aptly-named 'Run' and a Powerwolf-like 'Fury Of The Gods' act as cavalcades in the midst of a more mid-tempo heavy ensemble.

The two singers share rocky vocals with the titan Tim 'Tetzel' Schmidt and higher ones with Antonio Calanna, sometimes reminiscent of Eric Adams (Manowar). All For Metal follows on from a slightly epic track ('Born In Valhalla'), a new charge with a folk groove worthy of a Viking banquet ('Raise Your Hammer') and a heavy and warlike 'Hear The Drum'. The monumental 'Mountain Of Power', preceded by its introduction 'Prophecy Of Hope', and 'The Day Of Hammerfall', whose melody and keyboards hint at Lordi, will finish by converting the listeners to the warrior rites of their authors. Even the power ballad 'Legends Never Die' manages to be touching and haunting, bringing this flawless album to a close.

With its collection of unstoppable anthems, “Legends” sees All For Metal seamlessly seize the throne left vacant by Manowar two decades ago. The German-Italians have succeeded in finding the perfect balance between power and melody for a collection that will be a landmark in the genre, and to which a sequel is planned for 2024.
