Supersonic Revolution is the new project of Arjen Lucassen, as a band without knowing if it will last. The idea is to gather some of his instrumentalist friends to compose and play songs in the way of 70's hard rock like Deep Purple could do. No featurings like on the other albums, only one singer from beginning to end, and Arjen only on bass. No complicated or futuristic story, no (too) long song that turns into a demonstration, even if we are however in the field of progressive. However, the master's touch is there, especially on the choice of the instruments and the keyboard sounds which furiously remind Ayreon.
The first track, 'SR Prelude' is a bit misleading since it is a typical instrumental of... Arjen Lucassen, based on keyboards (Joost van den Broek at the controls) and brass instruments. Immediately afterwards, 'Glamattack' starts with a bang with singer Jaycee, guitarist Timo Somers and drummer Koen Herfst doing a lot of fills. The tempo s a bit on 'Golden Age of Music' in which the singer sounds like Joey Tempest from Europe (not a 70's reference at all, more like 80/90's).
The rest of the album is in the same vein and proves to be very homogeneous but with original compositions that hit the bull's eye. As in Deep Purple, the keyboard becomes a dominant element in several songs, almost making forget the guitar riffs (the intro of 'Rise of A Starman').
Finally, even if the album can seem a bit long and repetitive at the end, the listener has a good time. "Golden Age Of Music" should probably be very pleasant to hear live (even if one is entitled to doubt it knowing Arjen's aversion for this exercise) considering the excellent level of the instrumentalists and especially their successive emphasis. Supersonic Revolution is an exercise of style globally successful even if some will regret the inventiveness and the complexity of the usual compositions of Lucassen in Ayreon. - Official website
