"Closer to "Not of This World" than to "Pure" or "Passion", Pendragon's "North Star" should be reserved for fans of sunsets over a sea of oil rather than extreme skiing fans!"

Still firmly driven by the Barett (guitar/vocals) / Nolan (keyboards/backing vocals) / Gee (bass/backing vocals) trio, Pendragon has released a new opus: long EP or mini-album? More like a mini-album, the concept revolving around the three-part 'North Star' suite that gives the work its name, augmented by a final 'Fall Away' that doesn't detract from the whole, all for a total duration of just over 24 minutes.

No stylistic revolution to be expected: Pendragon have left their more energetic period of "Pure" and "Passion" to return to calmer shores, with 'Love Over Fear' joining older albums such as "Not of This World" in spirit. 'North Star' is in this calm vein, carried by guitars that lean more towards the acoustic than the electric side, even venturing towards the Hispanic on 'Fall Away'.

The result is very homogeneous - uniform, as the critics will say. "North Star" is an immersive record: for those who let themselves be carried away by the calm melodies and restful ambience, plenitude eventually sets in, scarcely disturbed by keyboards that are almost reduced to accompaniment layers, a very calm bass and rather subdued drums, more present in the middle section of the suite. The guitar lines are particularly meticulous and remain the keystone of the whole.

On the other hand, those who appreciate music with contrasts will be at a loss, and this is the limit of this very focused project. It's hard to get excited about such straightforward tracks, and "North Star" lacks the twists and turns and roller-coasters needed to win you over. Best reserved for fans of sunsets over a sea of oil, rather than extreme skiing fans...

OTHER REVIEWS
BEFORE THE DAWN: Stormbringers (2023)
DEATH METAL - Sealing the resurrection of Before The Dawn, "Stormbringers" will certainly delight fans of the band and of Finnish melodic death, but remains an album as effective as it is devoid of soul or surprise.
PHIL MANCA: Layers Of Pain (2023)
HEAVY METAL - With "Layers Of Pain", Phil Manca offers us an album somewhere between hard rock and heavy metal of the highest quality.
