With "Anathema", the French band Swarm had struck a blow. Somewhere between hardcore and thrash, they produced a hard-hitting record. The follow-up was eagerly awaited, and takes the form of an EP, "Mad In France". The band's rhythm section has changed with the arrival of Romain Contenti on drums and Florent Girauldon on bass.
The record is intense and doesn't lose itself in frills. From the outset, Swarm slams the listener with 'Another Choice'. The massive sound and clear rhythm impress, while Rémy's abrasive tone sounds like a war cry. The whole is like a fierce meeting between Hatebreed and Lamb Of God, with heavy soli of the highest order.
'One Cent' follows in the same thrash / hardcore vein, with a typical Pantera groove on the guitars. 'Our Place' and 'White Line' bring the hardcore side to the fore. The result is a snarling track that's ready to set any pit on fire. The solos impress with their typically thrashy speed of execution. 'Sanbiki No Saru' and 'Teub Life' are also bombshells, with a hardcore bent underpinned by French vocals of formidable intensity, which allow you to grasp the committed lyrics with a definite sarcastic wit.
With "Mad In France", Swarm reminds us with a thrash hardcore missile. Let's hope they come back soon with a full-length album, confirming their status as a major force on the French scene. - Official website
