"Ingenious Devices" is a very special album in Big Big Train's discography. The band re-recorded several epic tracks at Abbey Road Studios, adding strings in particular. In addition to bringing together the band's long tracks (over ten minutes) scattered across different albums, this is the first album since the death of singer David Longdon at the end of 2021.

On the whole, this dusting off brings new things to the table, reusing Langdon's vocals and, by re-orchestrating the whole, the richness of the revisited tracks comes out better. On 'East Coast Racer', which opens the album, the 17-string section brings a new breadth to this melodic, heady track (listening to it, by its very structure, this track would have a reason to be the last of a live session, not the first).

'The Book of Ingenious Devices' serves as an instrumental junction with the next track, 'Brooklands', whose beautiful lead guitar subdues and carries us away. This is the strongest track on the album. 'Voyager' begins like a ballad, but in prog style, with a complete change of pace along the way and a highly effective instrumental section. Finally, to close the album, 'Atlantic Cable', a track recorded live in 2022 with new singer Alberto Bravin, forms a bridge to future albums.

"Ingenious Devices" is a special album from Big Big Train, closing an era, paying tribute to David Langdon, and opening up a new chapter that we can't wait to hear.

HARD ROCK - "Wtfortyfive?" won't change Girlschool's career but it proves that English girls still have a lot left in the tank: and that's the main thing!
