A year and a half after "Chapter II - Legacy", here comes the third chapter of Ad Infinitum's adventures, a melodic metal band with female vocalist. Its successor had to confirm the flight of this rising star. We might as well kill the suspense immediately and recommend to these preys not to miss their next production, because "Chapter III - Downfall" ticks all the boxes of the successful album.
Indeed, this album is the most outstanding since their debut even if the power metal and symphonic sounds are less present to the profit of a modern metal and its electronic sounds. Moreover, it is better not to be allergic to pop metal and its catchy, even dancing atmospheres. These new tendencies, associated with heavier riffs and more aggressive elements, with notably Melissa's growls, offer a tasty mixture which proves to be a good synthesis of what we can listen to these days.
The tracks conjugate melodious and explosive characters, allowing the powerful and charismatic voice of the frontwoman to electrify the audience. Telling the story of the fall of the Egyptian civilization through the destiny of Cleopatra, "Chapter III - Downfall" exudes enough aggressiveness to please die hard and enough charming softness to seduce ears resistant to metallic sounds.
As for highlighting a few major tracks, we might as well throw a dart in the air and let fate decide on the selection. If it was necessary to wet oneself, one could evoke the pachydermic and galvanizing 'Eternal Rains' which brings back to Delain's melodies, and the electro-pop 'Upside Down' which would not disavow Amaranthe. However, these places on the podium could also be attributed to 'Seth' which, carried by its oriental touches, reminds the last realisations of Beyond The Black and to the magnificent ballad 'Somewhere Better' as much moving in its atmospheric moments as exhilarating on its refrain.
Epic, seismic and continuously melodic, this third opus of Ad Infinitum should allow the band to take its place in the big league of its world. Fans of the genre will now have a lot of work to do to decline their preference, whether it is in terms of band or talented singer. - Official website
