25 Yard Screamer is back for its eighth studio album. Great lovers of neo-progressive rock close to Marillion, the Welshmen have never really managed to get rid of this heavy influence, which gives their albums a lack of brilliance and originality. We start dreaming of a revival for the release of this new album with the rather evocative title "Nemesis" (the girl of the night, i.e. the personification of revenge).

Let's not spare the suspense unnecessarily, this new album of 25 Yard Screamer doesn't manage to distinguish itself from its model Marillion. First of all, the tessitura and tonalities of the singer's voice are still quite close to those of Steve Hogarth, falling into the same excesses as his model by becoming sometimes whiny and too plaintive, destroying any emotional construction. The musical structures are all identical, with the occasional unwelcomed guitar solo that fails to arouse interest. The Welshmen even scuttle themselves in several tracks in which a crescendo that seemed promising stops too early or brutally ends the track (especially on 'Giving Away My Last Secret' with its ignoble fade out). Not all is to be thrown away, however, with the swaying marine ambience of 'Adrift', the brief Celtic spirit of 'The Vibrations Of Speech' and the bluesy, acoustic 'Gravity' having enough sunny overtones to offer us some nice escapes.

A new album from 25 Yard Screamer and a new disappointment, the band still struggling to distinguish itself from its models when there is a real potential (starting with a rather aesthetic cover and the ability to venture into other styles). Maybe it's time to reconsider...

MEDEVIL: Mirror In The Darkness (2023)
HEAVY METAL - Medevil sign here a varied record. "Mirror In The Darkness" starts from a Thrash base to open up to progressive influences, and the result is very convincing.
ELVENKING: Reader Of The Runes - Rapture (2023)
PAGAN/VIKING METAL - Elvenking's "Reader Of The Runes - Rapture" is a fresh and cheerful folk metal record that can be listened to like watching a heroic fantasy movie.
