Like a good wine, Kampfar never stops improving with time, which makes us say that of this legendary Norwegian black metal scene, of which they are one of the pillars, it's not necessarily the most exposed and commercially renowned bands that age the best. Since 1994, a dozen albums have passed under the bridge, rarely disappointing, always solid.

Kampfar claims to have been inspired by their debut to compose this new album. It is a continuation of 'Profan' (2015) and 'Ofidians Manifest' (2019), but even more convincing. It is even possible to consider this ninth opus as the Valhalla of its creators, no more and no less. Listening to it calls for several remarks. The first is that age (Dolk is close to fifty) has no hold on the Scandinavians, whose expression is more aggressive than ever. You only have to take the opening of 'Rekviem' in the face to see that.

In fact, each of the six tracks that make up this chunky menu bubbles with a vigorous harshness but also with dark atmospheres, which makes it homogeneous and exciting from start to finish. However, it's when they dig into the cold rock of the majestic but still rough mid-tempos that the quartet proves to be the most imperial.

In this respect, 'Dødens aperitiff' must be mentioned at all costs, a final odyssey numbed by a funerary slowness which, by its tenebrous grandeur coupled with an incredible bewitching force, alone justifies the discovery of this record, which brilliantly manages to reconcile abrupt energy and granitic beauty, a combination that is nourished as much by Dolk's bewitchingly hard vocals as by the guitar bites that plough through landscapes of rocky immensity ('Lausdans Under Stjernene'). Even the keyboards sound with a low and mortal tone to soften these compositions, which contributes to their epic darkness.

Within the pagan black metal of which he is the dark and valiant herald, there is Kampfar and the others. His mastery is dazzling, the fruit of so many years of shaping his art, of which this "Til Klovers Takt", as unstoppable as it is indispensable, is a form of culmination.

ROCK - With "Head Over Water", Laura Cox seems to want to capitalize with talent on the elements that made the success of "Burning Bright" but she loses some warmth and authenticity.

ROCK - Laura Crutch's first solo album under the Slave To Sin banner, "Dead Inside" invites us to an escapade in industrial darkness.
