Catalyst is a technical death metal band who released their first record, "The Great Purpose of the Lords", which was a bomb. The band displayed a crazy energy and a formidable technique on compact and melodic compositions. Praised by the critics, this first try made the band a hope of the scene alongside Beyond Creation, First Fragment, Archspire or Gorod. For this second opus, Paul Loup left his drums to Stéphane Petit (Exorbited).
"A Different Painting For A New World" starts with a beautiful acoustic guitar, symphonic orchestrations and warlike percussions ('Gathering of New Forces') before 'To Unleash Thy Heinous Fate', a real steamroller that crushes everything in its path. The vocals roar, the riffs are hard-hitting, the drums is huge and the solitary guitar, worthy of Morbid Angel, is dissonant. 'The Last Warning' begins with a fine melody, then pours out a hellish rhythm. The track juxtaposes acoustic passages, intense saturated riffs and fast, flowing John Petrucci-like soli.
'A Different Painting for a New World' sums up all the qualities of Catalyst. The energetic and melodic track assumes its ultra technical orientation. Sometimes direct, sometimes more convoluted, the track is a total success transcended by majestic guitars, clear acoustic notes and clear vocals that touch the sublime. Finally, 'The Catalyst's End' is dark and melancholic and features interesting drumming with slowdowns followed by accelerations that crush the listener... Great art.
Catalyst combines the power of a rough Death Metal with technical passages worthy of Dream Theater and offers superb lyrics that are as much epic poems. "A Different Painting For A New World" is a dense, solid, technical and melodic album, full of emotion and groove. Between direct and heavy passages, technical flights of fancy and ambitious symphonic passages, here is a record that could have been among the best of 2022. - Official website
