"The return of Delain is a perfect success. "Dark Waters" does not stand out in the band's discography and will delight the fans who were surprised by the unexpected split of the band."

In February 2021 we were all surprised by the announcement of Delain's split. Four months later, we were just as surprised to learn that the band was rising from its ashes. Martijn Westerholt, considered as the leader of the band, decided to destroy his creature to make it reborn. In order to make this phoenix look good, he chose to bring back old musicians with the return of drummer Sander Zoer and guitarist Ronald Landa. However, the name of Charlotte Wessels' replacement was the most eagerly awaited.
Here comes Diana Leah. The singer, an Italian of Romanian origin, has been working in the electro scene until now and has a voice very similar to Charlotte's. This choice is not innocent, of course. Westerholt's search for a way to soothe the trauma of the redhead's departure could not help but lead him in this direction. His intention to release a Delain album that sounds like Delain was another. For there is no need to look for an evolution in the Dutch band. "Dark Waters" doesn't surprise in any way and sounds like a clone of the band's last albums.
If this lack of risk-taking may be annoying, the result is quite satisfactory. All the ingredients that made the band successful are there: the epic orchestral movements within convoluted structures, the lyrical, sweet and high vocals, often polyphonic, and sometimes accompanied by male voices, the ethereal and baroque choirs, the melodies with a pop tendency and the tonic riffs of the six strings.
If the rock mini-opera 'Invictus' with guests Marko Hietala (ex-Nightwish) and Paolo Ribaldini (Skiltron) should appeal to fans of the style, others will prefer the melodies of the epic and melodic pop 'Beneath' or the electro-dance metal sounding 'Moth To A Flame'. From the heavy heroic 'Queen Of Shadow', to the piano version of the single 'The Quest And The Curse', there is something for everyone. Even fans of instrumental tracks will find something to their liking, as the entire album is available in an instrumental version. This listening clearly shows the great work done on the compositions.
Delain has made a successful comeback. Delivering an album that will please its fans, the band ensures here the essential. However, those who are resistant to the specific tendencies of this type of music - lyrical female vocals, melodic pop tendencies, electro synths and telluric riffs - will continue to turn their back on the band. But it doesn't really matter, because the fact that Within Temptation have found their best challenger is already good news. - Official website
