"Always so offbeat, Björk delivers with "Fossora" an unequal album between astonishing titles and incongruous audacities."

If many artists copy each other more or less intentionally to the point that it becomes impossible to distinguish them, it is certainly not the case of Björk. The Icelandic singer has her own style, both in composition and interpretation, and it is not with her tenth album "Fossora" that she will join the army of clones that saturates us with all-purpose productions.

But this originality has a counterpart: the frankly avant-garde and sometimes experimental character of her albums is not made to please the amateurs of "simple" songs or simply looking for the pleasure of a well crafted melody. To please is the least of Björk's worries as she builds her albums according to her desires and her emotions. Just take a look at the video clip of 'Atopos' (linked below) to understand that the Icelandic singer's universe is as phantasmagorical as it is completely crazy. Beyond the visual worthy of the best Tim Burton's deliriums, this association between techno beats, a sextet of bass clarinets and this so characteristic, very articulated voice, which suddenly rushes for no apparent reason in a high-pitched voice, is not within the reach of all ears.

If the unbridled creativity of Björk is not to be demonstrated any more, this one seems sometimes to escape the control of its inspirer. "Fossora" alternates thus provocative titles, sometimes irritating of repetitiveness or free dissonances ('Ovule', 'Allow', 'Fossora' almost pop on its first part but saturated of indigestible percussions on the second half) and totally experimental pieces more or less successful ('Mycelia', atonal collage of syncopated voices, 'Sorrowful Soil', also only vocal but more seductive, 'Trölla-Gabba' at the limit of the audible). In the middle, some more melancholic tracks slip in from time to time, always surprising on the form but succeeding in distilling their bittersweet universe in the soul of the listener ('Ancestress', the anguishing 'Victimhood' or the dreamy 'Her Mother's House' sung as a duet with her daughter).

"Fossora" is a very demanding album that only the most avant-garde inclined listeners will be able to cope with, but it might destabilize them by a certain inconstancy.

@Tonyb

ANGEL RISING: Immortal Volition (2022)
DEATH METAL - "Immortal Volition" is a good technical album, with a strong personality and an overflowing energy, whose ardor may need to be channeled.
STRYPER: The Final Battle (2022)
MELODIC METAL - Mature and sure of his strength, Stryper delivers one of his best sermons with "The Final Battle" which turns out to be a formidable string of pieces as powerful as melodic.
