Headkeyz is a project born under the impulse of ADG, an artist who is not totally unknown. The musician from Montpellier has already acquired a certain background with several collaborations and albums, the last of which was "Schizophrenic Conversations". The artist has a wide range of styles that makes it difficult to put labels on him. This elusiveness is a reflection of Headkeyz' debut album.
"The Cage & The Crown: chapter I" ("the cage and the crowd") is the first of a series of two albums with a symbolic name regarding the contemporary society. This record claims to be post grunge. If it is true that it dresses up in the attires of it, it takes rather towards the alternative 90's and the fuzz of the 70's as the title 'Killing God' testifies it to the terribly effective groove. Because it resides here nostalgic elements which can return to the face of the listener as in the admirable '7Even', a kind of mixture between the seven deadly sins and the Even, in the jerky rhythm, almost funky, that a refrain dynamites with powerful riffs.
The concept, which rests schematically on the theme "man is a wolf to man", generates at the same time dynamic tracks ('Run, Run, Run' all in tension), sometimes more oppressive ('Passenger' with its filigree guitar line which reminds the great Pearl Jam period) while offering some tracks of transition well done ('Ctrl+Z'). The album also offers some contemplative and introspective moments like 'Speak', a beautiful neo-atmospheric ballad. The climax of the album is reached when the first notes of 'Big Bad World' begin, a kind of hybrid of all what was listened to previously, which concludes on a last almost epic part.
Here is an album which surprises by its richness and especially by the melodic research of each moment. Headkeyz could have been lost in the perilous exercise of being very eclectic in its orientation, however "The Cage & The Crown: chapter 1" is very well composed and interpreted. With an immersive side which pushes to the reflection by its small moments of contrasts, it comes out a very pleasant listening. - Official website
