RISE OF MERCURY: Rise Of Mercury (ALTERNATIVE ROCK): review / opinion to read on Music Waves

Rise Of Mercury is a newcomer in the Rock galaxy. Formed in 2020, the band, concentrated around a guitar-bass-drums trio, releases its first album of the same name.

'Luminary' sets the scene as a starting point, describing the dawn of a birth with a keyboard playing that reminds of an alarm clock. This opening cleverly places the different pieces of the puzzle with a formula that is found throughout the album: haunting and melancholic vocals, atmospheric/ambient rock atmosphere and ever-changing guitar tension.

Rise Of Mercury succeeds in dosing the hot and the cold thus proposing a desolate and tense atmosphere. The explosion is sometimes deferred, 'Earth' brings an atmospheric winter breath, the tension expressed by the guitar becomes more discreet, supplanted by a haunting and heady melody. 'Fragments' witnesses this struggle between the two climates, the band choosing an acoustic guitar to settle the conflict. However, we can regret that some tracks ('The Hourglass', 'Rebirth') obey a little too closely to this formula. Some instrumentals allow to breathe a little, but their brevity is somewhat prohibitive, these pieces would have deserved a better development (especially 'Alta Alatis Patent').

However, eclecticism seems to characterize this young band. Despite some expected tics, Rise of Mercury is able to surprise its audience. With its rhythm breaks, 'Nebula' flirts sensually with progressive rock, 'Artemis Superstar' almost makes us want to clap our hands. The biggest surprise, however, is 'Bad Robot', which lets a grunge spirit spreads with great glee.

From its first solo exploration, 'Rise Of Mercury' gets off to a good start. The listener is guided in a hectic sound universe but which knows how to reserve him some surprises. Without any doubt, this young group is promised to a beautiful future under our skies. - Official website
