It was already four years ago. Nothing But Echoes struck the spirits with their first opus "We | Are", full of melancholic ambiences, power and darkness. With an aesthetic already very asserted and well broken in, this first record opened the doors of Hellfest to the combo in 2019, one year later.
Deprived of concerts during the Covid era, the band get back to work. In 2022, two singles are released : 'Monsters' and its powerful intro reminds us of Gojira's 'Only Pain', carried by an excellent chorus and 'Illusion Of Control' which mixes screamed verses and choruses with hoarse vocals, while keeping a sharp sense of melody.
Nothing But Echoes also takes the time to set and develop the atmospheres with long tracks, of which 'Monsters' and its eight minutes are part. The opposite atmospheres are mixed, as on the very introspective 'Forever Lost', all in crescendo, which sounds like a cry of pain tearing the silence. The vocal performance of Marc Roquecave is particularly remarkable here, managing to mix despair and poetry in the most beautiful way. In a similar vein, 'Only Waste' opens the album in an ambitious way with ten minutes rising slowly in power and full of groovy and evil riffs.
If "We | Are" put forward a very pregnant cinematographic aspect, "The Sixth Extinction" is the perfect heir. Opening on samples of Greta Thundberg's famous speech at the climate summit in New York in 2019, the album has a rollercoaster feel with energetic pieces contrasted by short and minimalist tracks, adding a contemplative dimension to the whole ('Open The Earth' and 'Extinction').
With this second album, Nothing But Echoes confirms its exemplary management of the atmospheres through a refined post-metal with an impeccable aesthetic. We can't wait to follow the epic of this band, which is only at its beginning, for sure.
