Irist gave us a nice little slap with "Order Of The Mind". Thanks to their ability to transcend styles, the South Americans emigrated to Atlanta had imposed themselves in one album as a revelation to follow closely, thanks to compositions as powerful as hypnotic. With "Gloria", they confirm their good shape while preparing the sequel. Despite its duration of barely twenty minutes, this new EP proves to be as exciting as its predecessor.
Of course, Irist's influences are still very perceptible, both Gojira ('Gloria') and Mastodon ('Surging Ablaze'), but the Georgians have such an ease in alternating incandescent riffs and atmospheric breaks that their references are quickly forgotten and that the listener is literally caught by the depth and intensity of their music ('Heal').
Irist's strength lies in this subtle balance between brutality and finesse, which reaches its peak with 'Surging Ablaze', a real little nugget of prog sludge, and with 'Watchful Eye', whose density is particularly well enhanced by an impeccable production.
This last track is the one that departs the most from the musical formula maintained by Irist since "Order Of The Mind". With its huge riff and its very heavy atmosphere, 'Watchful Eye' takes us to the borders of post metal. Is this a trial run or a musical evolution in the making? We'll know with the next real Irist album. And it's an understatement to say that we're looking forward to it. - Official website
