The Five Finger Death Punch ship has been rocking a lot lately, but it has held up to the storms. The latest one came with the departure of Jason Hook after the release of "F8" at the end of 2020. He was quickly replaced by Andy James before the band released a new compilation to mark the end of a stage. "F8" was a decent album but left few memories.
"AfterLife", the band's ninth album, is a challenge, as fashions are fleeting in the musical style defended by Five Finger Death Punch. At first, we notice that the band has put forward its comic book side on the cover after a surprisingly sober "F8". What strikes then when listening is the immediate aspect of the titles which go to the essential, without embellishment, aiming at an immediate effect to seduce the most widely.
Even on the most powerful tracks, Five Finger Death Punch keeps a certain measure so as not to confuse the listeners of the US radios. The sound is huge, the drums invade the space and there is a typical American groove in the riffs. Yvan Moody imposes himself as well on the strong and melodic passages. He carries the tracks on the catchy choruses and brings the touch that turns them into potential hits.
The band also targets a more general audience with quasi-pop tracks with the airs of ballads typical of the US sound. 'Times Like These', 'IOU', 'Thanks For Asking' and 'The End' constitute a commercial package of formidable efficiency. Moody modulates his voice in a veiled mode worthy of Nickelback. The acoustic side is often here on sweet melodies and the chorus are formidable of effectiveness.
With "AfterLife", Five Finger Death Punch finds seems to start a new life. Of course, this metal seem is very formatted and quite mainstream but we have to recognize the efficiency of the whole and the talent of musicians who are at ease to propose melodies that hit the bull's eye. - Official website
