Publishing "Legacy Of The Dark Lands" in 2019, Blind Guardian freed himself from a weight so much the album took so long to be finalized. It saw the German band go all the way with their symphonic approach, closing a period in which they offered complex records that were sometimes too heavy. However, "Beyond The Red Mirror" was the first step towards a return to more simplified structures.
'Deliver Us From Evil' and 'Damnation' show a band going back to the 90's and especially to "Imaginations From The Other Side". He signs simple and melodic riffs, effective choruses, fast and epic instrumental parts. The success is total in a delicious old school spirit.
Then Blind Guardian intelligently alternates the atmospheres and offers moments of bravery. 'Violent Shadows', 'Architects Of Doom' and 'Blood Of The Elves' are fast in an old school Speed Metal style. The choruses are direct and carried by a Hansi who rips his voice like in the good old days of "Somewhere Far Beyond". As a perfect counterpoint, 'Life Beyond The Spheres' and 'Destiny' are close to the recent tone of the band with the emphasis on symphonic passages and theatrical aspects tinged with progressive.
The hit of the album is called 'Secrets Of American Gods' and mixes all the qualities of the band. Slowly rising in power, it alternates speed and melodic passages with a fabulous chorus as a climax. Worthy of the great era of the band, it gives chills and brings an extra dimension to the record.
With "The God Machine", Blind Guardian is very inspired and offers an anthology of the best of his art with many moments evoking his great era. - Official website
