"Nice return to the roots with this new MSG album. Michael Schenker shows that he still has things to say with this "Universal"."

Last year, for his 50th anniversary, Michael Schenker revived his legendary MSG after a ten-year absence. Now he offers us a "Universal" eagerly awaited by his followers. As usual, from one album to the other, it's the waltz of talents around the Axeman. If Ronnie Romero (Lords Of Black, The Ferrymen) has gone from being a guest to a regular singer and Ralph Sheepers (Primal Fear) survives the turnover, new guests are jostling each other. Michael Kiske (Helloween) and Garry Barden (MSG) are among them, as well as Barend Courbois (Blind Guardian) and the trio Bobby Rondinelli, Tony Carey and Bob Daisley, all former members of Rainbow.

If Michael Schenker is not always in an Olympic shape on all his productions, on this "Universal" he finds the verve of his younger years. The inspiration here is close to that of his blessed years, those of the first albums that built his legend as a lone worker after his departure from U.F.O. This decade where Rainbow started its post-Dio cure and where the divine frontman started his solo adventure. He comes back to his first love and release, in the style of his old inspirations, an opus with sepia colors.

'A King Has Gone', interpreted by Michael Kiske is preceded by 'Calling Baal', intro played on the Moog synth by Tony Carey which reminds the one of 'Tarot Woman' (Rainbow), title in which exploded the talent of Dio. Rondinelli, and Daisley mingle in this colorful tribute where Michael Schenker sends a solo characteristic of his early years. This emerald is not the only gem of "Universal". The thunderous opening 'Emergency' will resonate for a long time in the hearts of fans of the six-string genius. Sung in a masterful voice by Romero, it is illuminated by a solo that recalls the great days of the instrumental 'Into The Arena' (The Michael Schenker Group). 'Under Attack', with its catchy chorus and its 80's spirit, and the catchy 'London Calling', which evokes Romero's work with his two favorite bands, will win over all fans of the genre.

Carried by an exceptional singer whose so particular voice undeniably tints all the scores which are devolved to him, this new production of the divine guitarist shows that the true talent is registered in the duration. At 65, he still has a lot of energy and gives his MSG a second youth. A beautiful nostalgic object!
