We had to be patient to see Deficiency again. In 2017, the French had made a strong impression with "The Dawn Of Consciouness", a perfect condensation of thrash and death metal. Then the band toured intensively and even organized an anniversary festival in 2019. The way was royal but the pandemic cut this beautiful momentum brutally.
Many would have cracked but Deficiency hung on and took advantage of this break to change their habits, including the creation of a label. The result is "Warenta", an ambitious concept album. The group immersed itself in the history of its region around the 40's and comes back to the life of the miners and to the many stories of the time. A video clip was shot in the Miners' Museum and the cover illustrates the theme of the record.
The heart of the record comes from the tracks that evolve in a technical death thrash worthy of Messughah coupled with the strength of a Dew Scented and the airy side of a Cynic. The band also knows how to create more melodic moments that lighten the tracks, somewhere between Alice In Chains and Sentenced. Laurent Gisonna's talent explodes, as much at ease in a furious growl as in a melancholic clear vocal. On 'I Am The Misfortune Herald', the presence of Björn Strid (Soilwork) brings an appreciable supplement of power.
'Dichotomy', 'Ludma' and 'Alleviate The Suffering' form a strong techno thrash trio. The rhythm is intense, the technique well put forward with instrumental parts of high flight. Finally 'Lumpendoktor', which has as a guest Davish Alvarez from Angelus Apatrida, evolves in a brutal vein but offers a symphonic break full of emphasis. The track brings a dramatic tension in adequacy with the theme of the album with a certain epic force.
With "Warenta", Deficiency offers a high-flying record with an interesting ability to mix technique and catchy melodic moments. He is clearly launched on a royal way and seems well gone to become one of the big names of the hexagonal metal scene. - Official website
