For 25 years Caliban is a spearhead of metalcore and seems never to age. It defies fashion with insolence and freshnes. With "Zeitgeister" in 2021, a compilation of old songs sung in German, the band allowed its fans to wait before a long awaited twelfth album. The new album is called "Dystopia" and ends the longest wait between two albums of the band.
Most of the tracks ('Dystopia', 'VirUS', 'sWords'...) see Caliban put forward his dark and brutal side thanks to an intense rhythm, abrasive vocals and nervous riffs and soli. The presence of guest singers (Christoph Wiezoek from Annisokay, Marcus Bischoff from Heaven Shall Burn) is a plus to point out as they both mix their voices well with Andreas'. The clear vocals are well present and the mix works wonderfully with good melodies in a pure metalcore spirit close to melodic death metal.
Caliban also knows how to alternate the ambiences by putting its brutality in the background on some tracks. 'Alien', 'Dragon' in duet with Jonny Davy from Joy For A Cowboy and 'Hibernate' privilege the clear vocals with even a little pop side in some passages. The choruses are effective and the metallic side comes out at times to bring the necessary extra power. Carried by aerial and melodic soli, these titles are real hits which should seduce a lot of more general media.
"Dystopia" is a vintage of great quality. If Caliban doesn't reinvent himself, he shows a great maturity and a certain artistic ease, showing besides a remarkable vitality for a veteran. - Official website
