For the fan of doom rock, Dust Mountain ticks all the (good) boxes. The collective is Finnish, is signed to Svart Records and has played the Roadburn Festival, the Mecca of progressive music from another time. The fact that it is formed by explorers never satisfied such as the siblings Toni and Henna Hietamäki whose statement of the bands they are associated with, from Oranssi Pazuzu and Waste Of Space Orchestra (for him) and Cats Of Transnistria or Henna & Houreet (for her) is already enough to evoke a whole universe both sonorous and sensory, adds even more value to the project. The duo is the soul as well as the heart of it, to which are added the drummer Jukka Rämämen (Hexvessel, Dark Buddha Rising), the bassist Riku Pirttinienmi (Death Hawks) and the guitarist Pauliina Lindell (Vuono), whose pedigree is just as dreamy.
All this small world gathered for a kind of pagan and bucolic ceremony. The talents are technically impeccables and the whole is inspired by the psychedelic rock of the 60s, American (Jefferson Airplane) or English (Pentangle, Fairport Convention), often tinged with a feminine touch and sometimes frankly obscure (Coven And Linda Perhacs).
But if it promises of course a jump in time, "Hymns For Wilderness" invites us above all to a strange ritual with the paces of a saraband connected to the nature furrowing through a path nestled in the depths of a forest as mysterious as enchanting. Henna Hietamäki's melodies associated with flute and harp notes inoculate this mystical procession atmosphere ('Harvest Maiden') which is reminiscent of the survival of pagan cults illustrated by a film such as Robin Hardy's "The Wicker Man" (1973).
