Hailing from Chicago, Burned In Effigy launched their career in the late 2010s as an instrumental duo. A debut EP, "Terrestrial" released in 2017, served as the foundation before the addition of two guitarists and a vocalist. "Rex Mortem", the first album on which we find two tracks from the EP, allows us to discover a formation far from the American metal sound.

The band evolves in a melodic death music typical of the Swedish sound of the late 90s. We find influences going from At The Gates to In Flames but Burned In Effigy avoids sounding like a clone with interesting variations. Being in the spirit of the Swedish scene, the tracks are full of fast and melodic riffs, an intense rhythm and a vocal that balances between growl and guttural with power. Through calm and melodic breaks and high level solos, the band shows a perfect ease and technical mastery.

The technical side also allows the band to vary its purpose. 'Nightfall', 'The Empericist' and 'Treachery' add a neo-classical and progressive side. The result is very effective, not far from what Michael Amott proposes with Arch Enemy. Finally on 'Doomsayer', the guttural vocals mix death and melodic black in the way of Children Of Bodom.

Burned In Effigy doesn't propose anything revolutionary but it shows some interesting qualities. "Rex Mortem" is an ideal calling card that will please all the fans of melodic death metal. It will be necessary to follow closely the continuation of the adventures of this promising formation.
