At some point, to make your dreams come true, you have to stop thinking and follow the signs that fate sends you. Baptiste Brun's dream was to make an entirely instrumental album. After Stolen Memories' definitive end, the guitarist thought that it was the right time to record this "Origin" which was particularly dear to his heart. As with many other artists, the pandemic was ultimately a creative gas pedal, even though many of the demos that fueled the project were several years old.

In truth, even if we find in "Origin" everything that made the strength of Stolen Memories' "Paradox", notably hyper efficient riffs ('Virtual Harmony', 'The Element') and amazing shred solos ('Storm'), it's especially Baptiste Brun's ambition to develop his own universe that impresses the most in this album. If he has been influenced by many guitarists, first of all Patrick Rondat whose phrasing he adopts on several leads ('Untold', 'Chimera'), he makes a point of developing compositions that have the great merit of never falling into the easy way nor of sacrificing the melody on the altar of the technical demonstration at all costs.

To achieve this balance, the guitarist uses two main weapons: his impressive mastery of the 8-string guitar and his immoderate love for film music. The first one allows him to experiment new musical colors (for example the tapping riff on the low strings of 'Untold') and the second one gives to his music a symphonic aspect very inspired by John Williams that Michael Romeo ('The Element') wouldn't deny. The result is an inspired album, always interesting, which alternates between instrumental metal, Dantesque shreds and atmospheric passages ('Abyss') without ever falling into caricature.

"Origin" is built around the number 8 (8 tracks, 8 strings and an 8 in the center of the artwork) which, in Chinese culture, is associated with prosperity. So let's wish Baptiste Brun a musical prosperity at least with this beautiful album.
