After a cinematographic and ambient escapade with the rewritten soundtrack of "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari" in 2020, Toundra resumes the course of its career with an album more in line with its usual heavy post-rock. However, in this field too, the Spaniards have disappointed us recently with a too conventional "Vortex" two years ago.

"Hex" is the seventh album of the Madrilenians in a dozen years. It opens with 'El Odio' in three parts and nearly 24 minutes, which is obviously the cornerstone of the album. The rhythm section is clearly back on the first two parts with a special mention to the fills and polyrhythms of Alex Pérez. Where it is not simple to convey a message through an exclusively instrumental music, Esteban Giron and his band chose to put 'El Odio' in images to deliver it to us. And it is not very optimistic since "the hatred" of which it speaks touches all the strata of our society: the climate, the social and racial segregations and the excessive consumerism are themes dear to the group.

The musical phases follow one another as usual with Toundra on the four other tracks that give the place to the luminous melodies and the progressive ascents, immediately recognizable signature of the combo from Madrid. Where 'Ruinas' flies towards post rock and heavy summits, 'La Larga Marcha' is more calm with its linear progressive rise, while 'FIN' and its ambiences between acoustic and electro surprises for an atypical and welcome final in a vein close to Anathema. As for 'Watt', it constitutes, thanks to its sharp riffs, its unstoppable melody, its anguishing sax and its communicative energy, the other melodic-rhythmic summit of this drily well arranged "Hex".

Less subtle than Long Distance Calling, less fine than Monkey 3, Toundra remains a band with its own musical signature and clearly plays in the same court as the heavyweights of the modern heavy post rock, and its album 'Hex' finds its place in the logical continuation of the career of the band. Even if the band is still evolving in his comfort zone, "Hex" sounds the return of Toundra on the front of the progressive post-rock scene, but have they ever left it?
