It doesn't happen every day. Here is an EP coming straight from Saudi Arabia, and what's more, a metal EP. It's rare enough to give it a close listen. Dusk is the solo project of guitarist Meshari Sangora, also founder of the band Figurez which evolves in a totally mainstream hip hop and R&B register. With Dusk, it is a 180° turn that the Saudi negotiates, since this EP is centered on good big metal riffs with particularly marked djent influences.

As often with this style, the computer programmed drum patterns are omnipresent. But let's be magnanimous because, for an EP recorded with the means at hand, "To Where I Belong" benefits from a very correct production which emphasizes the raw sound of the guitars. This choice has the advantage of highlighting the power of the compositions which often flirt with metalcore, so much so that a screamed vocal would not have been out of place on tracks like 'Beneath My Fears' or 'Epiphany'.

Yet Dusk is indeed an instrumental project in the air of time, combining melody, technique ('To Where I Belong') and a strong desire to fight and cross borders. Because the most surprising thing is probably that it is impossible to guess the origin of this EP without reading the press kit. The influences of Meshari Sangora and his guest guitarists (Abdulrahman Elghazali on 'Fear Is The Thing They Desire' and Madani Zakri on 'Epiphany') are exclusively western and are to be found on the side of Intervals and Arch Echo.

Even if Dusk is not yet at the level of his models, "To Where I Belong" is an EP explosive enough to deserve our attention. A little oriental touch would probably give it a little more personality. Not sure however that this is the will of its founder. The future will tell us.
