Fourth EP for Every Hour Kills, which is not really a band but rather a collective led by the guitarist Sacha Laskow. This one moreover does not hide that "Vacua" was composed and recorded mainly thanks to artificial intelligence during the pandemic. Whether we deplore it or not, we are obliged to do with the means at hand when we are under house arrest at the foot of the Calgary mountains. In any case, this period of forced isolation will have left traces in his way of composing since we can now easily add the suffix "core" to the technical djent proposed by the Canadians.

Indeed, "Vacua" is not only the heaviest EP that Every Hour Kills has released since its inception in 2013, but it is also the darkest and most chaotic. Even if the fundamentals remain: a modern metal leaning towards metalcore ('Tenebrous') with convoluted djent rhythms and electro or even synthwave ambiences still present ('Euclidian'), the clean vocals have practically disappeared and given way to predominantly saturated vocals that leave no doubt about the state of mind in which this EP was composed.

The track 'Intransigent' is the most striking example of this stylistic evolution towards a technical, dark and violent deathcore that will delight both Periphery and Born Of Osiris fans and that will make more than one listener shiver listening to the cavernous growls.

With its djentcore compositions that grab the throat without ever releasing the pressure, "Vacua" has all the makings of a cathartic EP. Of course, it won't reconcile with djent those who reproach it for being a computer-assisted music, but it has at least the merit of not pretending and gives Every Hour Kills the opportunity to shout its rage to the world.
