For ten years, Dust In Mind has been walking a musical path haunted by human torments. "Never Look Back" proposed a "modern death with racy compositions and nervous rhythms" while "From Ashes to Flames" was oriented towards melodic music with an industrial tendency. But each time, the compositions were marked by the voice of Jennifer Gervais... as is marked by multiple tattoos on the body of the cover of "CTRL" their new album.
The record is in balance between power and softness ('Freefall', 'No Way Out'). Rock passages coexist with almost pop moments in the manner of Within Temptation. This mixture is dressed with refined melodies, very structured leaded riffs or icy keyboards evoking Rammstein ('W.G.A.C.A'). As for 'Synapses', it is the occasion to revisit Piaf's 'Padam Padam' in a... different version. Jennifer has fun with this shift, with these ghostly moments where she summons the spirit of the girl. The first strength of the record is the melody, always the melody!
Dust In Mind forsakes for a while the lyrical flights in order to put forward its metal facet. The rhythms are dry and sometimes at the limit of the thrash ('Speak For The Voiceless' or 'The White Page'). They are also acoustic passages that bring a fragile beauty and expose the soul of the record ('Freefall'). These graceful seconds allow to emphasize the beautiful vocal lines.
Thus the greatest success of the disc is its vocal balance. Like on "The Human Equation" (Ayreon), the intonations seem to express multiple and troubled feelings. It is in that that the proportioning between male voice and female voice is right and simple ('W.G.A.C.A' or 'Empty'). Then, even if it is dark and sometimes pessimistic, the silky vocals feeds the compositions and brings a soothing note.
The harsh and limpid music of the very beautiful 'CTRL' is a case for Jennifer's voice, source of all emotion. It is also thanks to powerful compositions, with industrial sounds and pop melodies that Dust In Mind shows a new facet of its talent. If you don't know them, this very successful record is the occasion to discover a music that follows its own way.
